Surviving a Prompt Injection

Update, 2026-08-07 8pm: I later got a few comments on Facebook suggesting this may have been an Opus 4.8 hallucination. If that’s what it was, so much the better, at least nothing was actually compromised. Even so, this incident convinced me that I really had let my guard down too far. If you’re running in auto mode, it’s safer to develop inside an isolated environment, and if something does go wrong, it’s much easier to contain.
After spending this much time with Claude Code, I’ve been impressed by the efficiency it brings. At the same time, once auto mode had worked fine for several months, my guard on security gradually came down.
Then, on a hot summer afternoon a few weeks ago, I was watching Claude Code in auto mode rapidly finish its work and move into wrapping up, ready to diff and then commit. At that point the conversation suddenly paused for quite a while. Claude Code’s servers had been unstable a lot during this period, so I didn’t think much of it.
Several minutes passed, and the timer in the conversation window kept counting up.
Then suddenly, Claude Code warned me:

The lazy mood the hot summer had put me in vanished instantly, and a chill ran down my spine.
When I tried to ask which command had produced that output, it went on to warn me that git show was now also producing the same install command. That was when it slowly became clear to me what I was looking at.
It was Prompt Injection.
After a panicked, hurried round of backup planning, I completely reinstalled both of the computers I had on hand. I was too flustered to do a proper investigation, and I even foolishly asked Claude to check whether git diff had some alias set on it. It said everything looked normal (of course, if I were the culprit, I would whistle and say nothing had happened). What I did notice was that the Prompt Injection warning only appeared when Claude ran git commands, never when I ran them myself.
So I reinstalled the machines completely before finding the root cause, which left me with a nagging feeling: I still don’t know how it got in. Even though Claude Code’s auto mode blocked that particular Prompt Injection, I can’t guarantee the machines hadn’t already been compromised before it.
All I could do was revoke every credential I had and try to contain the blast radius. I still can’t say clearly what the path in was.
There were far too many lessons here to list.
But the principle is this: if you’re going to run anything in auto mode, the Agent has to be locked in a restricted environment, and whatever credentials you give it must be scoped and revocable at any time. On top of that, you have to make sure the Coding Agent can’t reach any resource on the Host.

I built my setup on Windows, but the approach is similar on other operating systems. What it comes down to is creating several WSL Linux guest instances, one per purpose, none of which can mount the Windows Host disks, and stripping the regular user’s sudo privileges entirely so that a guest instance can’t escape its own environment.
The next step is an audit mechanism for important files and directories. If anything has been modified, it raises a warning for further review, and the only way to approve it is to switch into Linux from the Windows host with the wsl command and run as root. It can’t be done through sudo.
At the same time, all Web Fetch requests are blocked by default (Web Search is allowed by default, since it has already been filtered once on Claude’s servers). Beyond that, Claude Code has to file a request to allow a domain whenever it needs Web Fetch.
I’m still looking for other tools that might fit better. So far the Docker Sandbox environment sbx looks like one option.
This time it appears Claude Code’s auto mode classifier caught it, but I can’t be sure I hadn’t already been hit by Prompt Injection before that, so recovery had to assume the entire machine was already lost.
Looking back at this incident, it’s a little absurd that I let my guard down after only a few months, and I underestimated how destructive arbitrary command execution can be. On the other hand, I’ve benefited from the efficiency Coding Agents bring, and I don’t think I could go back to developing any other way.
